Korea Foundation “Global e-School Project"

This project aims to expand Korea-related lectures outside Korea and strengthen the network among universities in and out of Korea by conducting real-time video lectures and connecting various offline programs such as workshops and seminars domestically and abroad. (Date: March 2013 - February 2014)

Ministry of Environment and Korea Environment Corporation “The 5th International Environmental Expert Development Project"

This program develops international environmental experts who can play major roles at international organizations, governments, environmental consulting at large companies, public/private corporations research institute. Those with outstanding records are provided with internship opportunities at UNEP, UN-ESCAP, OECD, and other international organizations related to environmental research.

Korea Foundation “Global e-School Project”

This project aims to expand Korea-related lectures outside Korea and strengthen the network among universities in and out of Korea by conducting real-time video lectures and connecting various offline programs such as workshops and seminars domestically and abroad. (Date: March 2012 - February 2013)

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade “ASEAN environmental instructor training to promote the spread of Green Growth Model.”

IEWS hosts an environmental education training program sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in order to spread Korea’s Green Growth Model to teachers/educators from 10 ASEAN nations and ultimately reinforce the competence of developing countries.

Humanities Korea (HK) Research Project 3rd Year

Title : ' The European Union as a Historical Mark of Trans-Boundary Civilization' This National Research Foundation of Korea's HK Promising Institution project funded by the Ministry of Education and Science, pursues multidisciplinary understanding of the European Union via the concept of trans-boundary civilization. As the third and final year, in 2012, the institute is researching the challenges and the future of EU trans-boundary systems after the Lisbon Treaty.

Sponsored by the Asia Research Fund, IEWS has built multi-faceted and systematic data for people and organizations interested in academic research, media coverage, student education, executive work in international relations, and exchange among ordinary citizens.

Humanities Korea (HK) Research Project 2nd Year

Title : ' The European Union as a Historical Mark of Trans-Boundary Civilization'
This National Research Foundation of Korea's HK Promising Institution project funded by the Ministry of Education and Science, pursues multidisciplinary understanding of the European Union via the concept of trans-boundary civilization. In the second year of 2011, the institute focused on the intensive and extensive spreading of the trans-boundary development in European integration after the 1990s.

Korea Foundation “Memorandum of Understanding for co-hosting of the Korea-EU

The university and the foundation pursued a project that benefitted both Korea and the EU by establishing mutual cooperation, and thereby contributing to the promotion of each party’s forum projects.

Research Project

There were 23 research projects carried out in 2013, including the National Research Foundation of Korea task ‘Nation and Civil Society in the Era of Network'. The total revenue of projects is 908,370,468 Won (including continuing tasks). Research projects were funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Samsung Economic Research Institute, Japan Foundation, (Re) Asia Research Fund, Samsung Heavy Industries Inc., Korea Environment Corporation, Korea Foundation, (Re) Foundation , Ssang Yong Paper Co., Ltd., Kim & Chang Law Firm, and Yonsei University.

Conference and Seminars

Throughout 2013, IEWS, research centers under IEWS, and Yonsei-SERI EU Center hosted 93 conferences and seminars, including international conferences, domestic seminars, workshops, forums, lectures, Diplomatic Roundtable, and regional studies lectures. Presenters and panels for the conferences and seminars were experts and scholars from in and outside Korea.

Diplomatic Roundtable Series. This institute began the Diplomatic Roundtable, in which foreign ambassadors to Korea discuss the foreign policies of their respective countries and its relationship with Korea, in 1998. As of now, the institute has hosted 60 invitational seminars. Through academic exchanges with foreign ambassadors, this institute not only pursues better relationships between the ambassadors and the institute but also promotes cooperation between Korea and other nations. Moreover, Diplomatic Roundtable provides an opportunity through for ambassadors to exchange ideas amongst themselves. In 2013, the institute invited Vishnu Prakash, , Indian Ambassador to Korea, Peter Tan, Singapore Ambassador to Korea, Scott Wightman, British Ambassador to Korea, William Peterson, Australian Ambassador to Korea, David Chatterson, Canadian Ambassadors to Korea, and and Lars Danielsson, Swedish Ambassador to Korea.

HK Promising Institute

The institute has conducted a 3 year Korea Research Foundation HK Promising Institute project, a main research project. This project studied the EU and the history of trans-boundary civilization in the context of interrelated changes in concepts, mechanisms, and systems of European integration and the processes of EU-northern Europe trans-boundary transformation. During the first year and the second year, the institute focused on the trans-boundary development in Europe from the end of WWII to the 1980s and the expansion of the trans-boundary system, respectively. In the third year, the institute has researched the challenges and the general future of the EU trans-boundary system after the Lisbon Agreement.

Education Program

Under the supervision of research professor Seong Jeong-Hee and the sponsorship of the Ministry of Environment, we began the International Environment Expert Training Program in 2009 and have contiuned the program until 2013. In this current period when environmental problems such as climate change are emerging as an international issues, the institute trains international environment experts who can play pivitol roles in international organizations, governments, environment consulting of large corporations, and corporation institutes with the support of the Ministry of Environment.

Yonsei-SERI EU Centre

In 2009, with the sponsorship of the European Commission and the cooperation of Samsung Economic Research Institute, Yonsei-SERI Centre was established. The center is sponsored by the EU until May 2016, and Yonsei University and SERI also provide matching fund. Currently, this institute’s Yonsei-SERI EU Centre consists of four research/administrative branches, and it issues EU Brief six times a year. The institute published Vol. 6, No. 2 in April, 2014.

IEWS G20 BRIEF

Every time a new major international issue appears, this institute has distributed reports on the characteristic, significance, and future direction of the issue to policy-makers and media organizations. The institute aims to contribute to the understanding and the dealing of international problems and promote this institute in and outside Korea as a research institute on international issues. By 2009, the 8th report was issued under the name “News Analysis from IEWS.” In 2010, 7 issues were published under the name “IEWS G20 BRIEF” and in 2012 issue 22 was published. The reports can be accessed through the IEWS website.

Networker

This institute sends information on recent events and news via an e-newsletter to all Yonsei faculty members and the experts in relevant organizations. In 2013, 72th issue was published. The publications can be accessed through the IEWS website.

Regular Publications

Regular publications of this institute include two academic journals, the newsletter Networker, and IEWS G20 BRIEF. The English journal Global Economic Review (GER) is issued four times a year. The Korean/English journal “East and West Studies” is issued four times a year since 2012, and was previously published twice a year. GER is published by a world-class publisher Routledge, and was registered in SSCI in 2009. GER was also selected as a registered journal by National Research Foundation in 2006, and “East and West Studies” also became a registered journal for Hakjin in December 2011.

Cooperation with foreign and domestic organizations

IEWS has established cooperative relation with 22 institutions in 8 countries through Memorandum of Understanding to exchange information and publications and to welcome scholars for research and to hold jointly international conferences. We are continuously expanding cooperation with other organizations.

Strengthening the relation with Area studies curriculum

The institute is encouraging active participation of research professors and researchers in Area studies curriculum and strengthening the connection.

Educational Organization

Graduate Program in Area Studies

Founding Purpose
The founding purpose is to train regional experts who can respond to continuous changes that come with globalization.

Current State
This curriculum aims to provide professional education necessary to effectively respond to changes in the international environment and develop regional experts through interdisciplinary education in humanities and social science. The majors offered in this program are Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Russia/East Europe. The institute fosters a total of 67 students (55 master's 2 combined master's and doctoral and 10 doctoral degree program) as of the 2014 Spring Semester.
